Los Angeles Dodgers
Jeff Samardzija gave the San Francisco Giants exactly what they were expecting in his last start, while Kenta Maeda has been more than what the Los Angeles Dodgers could have hoped for through his first two. Determined to strengthen a rotation that had few dependable options behind Madison Bumgarner, the Giants spent a combined $220 million on Johnny Cueto and Samardzija during an aggressive offseason. The plan has paid off so far, as Cueto improved to 3-0 after delivering 7 1-3 sharp innings in Saturday's 4-3 win and Samardzija (1-0, 3.38 ERA) dominated through eight in his second start Tuesday at Colorado. Johnny Cueto pitched 7 1/3 sharp innings, and the San Francisco Giants got run-scoring hits from Joe Panik, Brandon Crawford and Brandon Belt in a 4-3 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday night. Cueto (3-0) helped manager Bruce Bochy celebrate his 61st birthday, allowing a run and three hits with seven strikeouts. Javier Lopez gave up Corey Seager's two-run homer in the eighth on a full count, but Santiago Casilla got the last three outs for his third save in four chances after giving up a leadoff double by Yasmani Grandal. In a story April 15 about Jackie Robinson Day, The Associated Press reported erroneously that Robinson was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1972. PHILADELPHIA - As cities across the country honored Jackie Robinson's pioneering baseball career, one also apologized for its racist treatment of Major League Baseball's first black player nearly 70 years ago. When Robinson's Brooklyn Dodgers played the Philadelphia Phillies in 1947, he was told to ''go back to the cotton fields'' by the Phillies' manager, refused service at a local hotel and taunted by players with racial slurs when he came to bat. When the San Diego Padres opened the bottom of the ninth inning with consecutive singles to put runners on first and third, Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale had to think ahead to possible extra innings because the Padres were in great shape to at least score the tying run. Brad Ziegler struck out Alexi Amarista, intentionally walked pinch-hitter Brett Wallace to load the bases and then got Jon Jay to ground into a game-ending double play. ''It was relief, for sure,'' Ziegler said after getting his second save. Continue to Article
