Milwaukee Brewers
Jaime Garcia's near-flawless start got the St. Louis Cardinals back in the win column on their nine-game homestand, and Carlos Martinez will try to follow by building on his solid season debut. At least a portion of the Busch Stadium contingent, however, will be pulling for Cincinnati Reds rookie Tim Melville in his return home Friday night. Garcia's one-hitter with 13 strikeouts powered St. Louis to a 7-0 victory against Milwaukee on Thursday, and Martinez (1-0, 3.00 ERA) will seek to lead the Cardinals (5-4) to their sixth win in seven games. Pittsburgh Pirates
Even the best players in the game occasionally make embarrassing mistakes. Pittsburgh Pirates ace Gerrit Cole definitely qualifies as a superstar. Most days, the 25-year-old dominates his opponents. His 2.60 ERA and fourth place finish in the Cy Young voting last season should tell you as much. [ Join a Yahoo Daily Fantasy Baseball contest now ] And yet, even Gerrit Cole can sometimes look foolish on the mound. Cole made a rare error during Thursday's game against the Detroit Tigers.  In the fourth inning of the contest, outfielder Justin Upton reached first base on a fielder's choice. Cole wanted to make sure Upton stayed close to the bag, and rifled over a pick-off throw in hopes of keeping the runner honest. Problem was, there was nobody covering first base when Cole threw the ball over there. John Jaso, the Pirates' first baseman, was moving into his normal defensive position just prior to the throw, and wasn't holding Upton on first.  Upton advanced to third on the play, and eventually came around to score. The run padded the Tigers' early lead, though it wasn't the deciding factor in Detroit's 7-4 victory.  It's important to note that the Pirates were wearing their alternate camouflage jerseys during the contest. It's possible Cole believed Jaso was actually covering first, but he couldn't see him due to the effectiveness of the camouflage. More likely, however, is that Cole possibly mistook Jaso for Upton. Out of the corner of his eye, he probably saw a figure quickly advancing in the direction of second base, and thought maybe Upton was getting too greedy with his lead. It's also possible that he just had a total brain cramp. [Elsewhere: Bryce Harper's first grand slam was also his 100th career home run ] Either way, it's pretty rare to see such a talented player make a silly mistake like this. The Tigers were wise to take advantage in this instance, because opposing teams don't get too many openings when Cole is on the mound.  More MLB coverage from Yahoo Sports: - - - - - - - Chris Cwik is a writer for Big League Stew on Yahoo Sports. Josh Harrison played a part in the Pittsburgh Pirates ending their inexplicable struggles against the Milwaukee Brewers late last season. Harrison will look to make a similar impact when the host Pirates try to avoid their fourth straight loss Friday night in this series opener with Milwaukee. Pittsburgh won 98 games en route to a wild-card spot last season, while Milwaukee lost 94 on the way to a fourth-place finish in the NL Central. Continue to Article

Milwaukee Brewers
Welcome to The Walk Off, the nightly MLB recap from Big League Stew. Here we'll look at the top performers of the night, show you a must-see highlight and rundown the scoreboard. First, we start with a game you need to know about. We knew the Baltimore Orioles weren't going to finish the season 162-0, but their fans would have been plenty satisfied with 8-0 on Wednesday night. Unfortunately for them, that wasn't to be either. In a game that was decided by timely pitching and timely hitting, time finally ran out on their perfect season as they fell 4-2 to the Red Sox at Fenway Park . [ Join a Yahoo Daily Fantasy Baseball contest now ] Baltimore certainly had its chances against Red Sox starter Joe Kelly. He allowed a baserunner in each of his five innings and needed a staggering 116 pitches to record 15 outs. He did prove resilient though, making quality pitches when he needed to. As a result, he minimized the damage against him, allowing just two runs despite giving up seven hits and walking five. Continue to Article
