Oakland Athletics
Nathan Karns settled down and pitched better in spring training once he learned he won the job as the Seattle Mariners' fifth starter. Karns was part of the six-player swap completed Nov. 5 with Tampa Bay, coming over along with fellow pitcher and C.J. Riefenhauser and minor league outfielder Boog Powell. Karns posted a 3.75 ERA in his final two after manager Scott Servais told him he had won the job. Continue to Article

Oakland Athletics
Oakland's Chris Coghlan had never seen the unorthodox sidearm delivery of right-hander Steve Cishek from the batter's box until Friday night. It's not a comfortable at-bat,'' Coghlan said. Coghlan hit a solo home run with one out in the top of the ninth inning to give the Athletics a 3-2 win over Seattle and spoil the Mariners' home opener. Continue to Article

Oakland Athletics
Chris Coghlan hit a solo home run with one out in the top of the ninth inning off closer Steve Cishek to give the Oakland Athletics a 3-2 win over the Mariners on Friday night in Seattle's home opener. The largest regular season crowd in Safeco Field history - 47,065 - watched to-be Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr. throw out the ceremonial first pitch. Then they saw the Mariners new closer give up a long ball in the ninth. Continue to Article

Seattle Mariners
For the past few months Ken Griffey Jr. has played a lot of golf and tried to avoid thinking or talking about his Hall of Fame induction. Just the way Griffey would like it. ''For me, it's trying to dodge things and not get caught up,'' Griffey said. Continue to Article

Ken Griffey Jr. made a career out of defying limits and defying gravity on the baseball field. Those are two big reasons why the baseball Hall of Fame will opens its doors to him at the end of July. [ Sign up for Fantasy Baseball | Play for $40K | Expert rankings | Mock draft ] It's also why the folks at Nike are paying tribute to Griffey with this completely awesome photoshop. A photoshop that actually shows him going beyond those limits at Fenway Park in Boston. Defy gravity. #defylimits . Ken Griffey Jr. returns to Seattle tonight. https://t.co/txKZI1x3Xd pic.twitter.com/dZWea2CZ2c — Nike Baseball (@nikebaseball) April 8, 2016 Again, the photo is not real, but it's certainly symbolic of a career that exploded above and beyond even the highest of expectations. Nike's tribute comes ahead of the Seattle Mariners home opener on Friday night against the Oakland A's. Griffey will be honored in a pregame ceremony and will handle the first pitch duties. If you're interested in watching, the entire ceremony will be streamed live on Mariners.com and shown on Root Sports in Seattle. Of course, Seattle holds a special place in Griffey's heart. The Mariners made him the first overall pick in the 1987 amateur draft. After debuting in 1989, Griffey spent parts of 13 seasons in Seattle, including two alongside his father. He hit 417 of his 630 career homers in their uniform, including the first and last of his storied career.  [Related:  Adidas unveils special Jackie Robinson Day cleats ] He's an icon in Seattle and all throughout the northwest, which is where Nike is also based. They've gone hand-in-hand for years, and it's only fitting a Nike tribute highlights the first of many special days coming for Ken Griffey Jr. during this baseball season.  BLS H/N: Eye on Baseball More MLB coverage from Yahoo Sports: - - - - - - - Mark Townsend is a writer for Big League Stew on Yahoo Sports.
