Oakland Athletics
In April baseball, no matter how great the results are, they don't matter too much. There's still a-hundred-and-something more games ahead and even the most fantastic game-saving catch is wiped clean when the next game starts.  Not so if you're a fan. If you're a fan and you make a great catch at a game — even if it's an April game — that's the moment of a lifetime. And that's why this Oakland Athletics fan above is already a champion. Even in the first week of April. [ Elsewhere:  Cubs slugger Kyle Schwarber injured in collision with Dexter Fowler ] He hauled in a foul ball Thursday during Oakland's game against the Chicago White Sox. The A's didn't win, but he sure did . And we're going to count the ways. 1. The bare-handed grab . Look at it. Master it. Praise it. While I'm not adamantly against adult fans bring gloves to games (like some people ), real still recognizes real. A bare-handed catch is legit. 2. Dude didn't even spill his beer. It wasn't a full beer, so the degree of difficult isn't as high, but still. Bare-handed catch and full control of the beer? This guy is a pro. 3. Wait 'til the end and you'll see it. What does the ball-grabbing, beer-balancing fan do afterward? Finds a kid in the stands to give the ball to.  Hats off to you, sir, from beginning to end. Mat Latos is still working to get full strength in his legs. All the other signs are encouraging for Chicago's right-hander - and that's a bonus for manager Robin Ventura's ballclub. Latos gave up one hit over six shutout innings for his first win since last July, Jose Abreu hit a two-run homer and the White Sox beat the Oakland Athletics 6-1 on Thursday to give Ventura his 300th career win. Seattle Mariners
For the second straight season, young Mariners right-hander Taijuan Walker will make his season debut against Oakland. Almost any result will be better than Walker's first start against the A's to begin last year. The Mariners return to the Pacific Northwest on Friday night to kick off their home slate with a three-game series against the A's. Friday will include all pomp and circumstance of a traditional opening day - including new Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr. throwing out the first pitch - plus some curiosity about this year's Mariners. Oakland Athletics
The story for the Oakland Athletics dating back to last season has been their inability to win close games. More specifically, the A's have struggled mightily in games decided by one run. Last season, Oakland finished an unthinkable 19-35 in one-run games, including beginning the season 2-15. Some might dismiss that as fluky, as the A's obviously competed well in all of those games. However, the results could also be exposing a team that simply isn't executing when necessary, which resulted in it consistently falling short.  [ Sign up for Fantasy Baseball | Play for $40K | Expert rankings | Mock draft ] Oakland's league-leading 126 errors last season would certainly back up the latter point.
