Florida Panthers
When Mike Babcock was talking about the young Toronto Maple Leafs trio of William Nylander, Zach Hyman and Nikita Soshnikov he said, “[I]f they can show they can play, then let's play them.” With Toronto heading for the draft lottery, Babcock and GM Lou Lamoriello will continue to see what the three kids can do at the NHL level as they will be in the lineup Thursday night, hitting the 10-game mark in the process. We all know the Leafs' plan include a long-term vision, with those three hopefully a big part of it.  In Nylander’s case, being in the lineup against the Florida Panthers will mean burning the first year of his entry-level deal. He'll become a restricted free agent in the summer of 2018. [ Join a Yahoo Daily Fantasy Hockey contest today ] Should Nylander stay up this season and play the remaining games left on the Leafs' schedule, that will give him 22 NHL games of service, 18 games short of the minimum needed to bring a player one year closer to UFA status. Nylander (45 points), Hyman (33 points) and Soshnikov (28 points) were all key in helping the Toronto Marlies to the AHL’s best record . Once Toronto's season ends, all three can go back down and help in a Calder Cup run. For now, they'll just continue giving Leafs fans a glimpse into the future. - - - - - - - Sean Leahy is the associate editor for Puck Daddy on Yahoo Sports. Have a tip? BOCA RATON, Fla. – NHL officials gave parameters for a possible expansion draft during the final day of their general managers meetings at the Boca Raton Resort and Club. The hope was this would provide one of the deeper expansion drafts in NHL history. The league has not specifically ruled on expansion yet, though it has applications from possible franchises in Quebec City and Las Vegas. NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said he hoped to have a decision for expansion on the 2017-18 season by June. [ Join a Yahoo Daily Fantasy Hockey contest today ] NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said that if the league expands by one team, then each current club can lose one player. If it’s two teams, then each team can lose two players.  First or second year pros will be exempt from the draft. Unsigned and drafted players are exempt for two years after their draft year. Teams can protect seven forwards, three defenseman and one goaltender or just eight total skaters and one goaltender. There is no current scenario where a team can protect two goaltenders. Combined salary for players not protected by a team would need to hit 25 percent of a team’s total payroll. The league has noted that it will try to create one of the deeper expansion drafts so new teams can be competitive early, rather than lose momentum after their inaugural season. “The other variation that makes this expansion draft different is we would contemplate having some thresholds based on salary to make sure that the expansion club can be competitive based on the ranges we have in the CBA,” Daly said. “Teams would have some obligation to expose a level of salary. And in terms of drafting players, teams would have to draft a certain threshold of salary.” Daly said the expansion draft rules were not “set in stone” and Wednesday’s discussion with the NHL’s general managers was more conceptual. He also the league would need to talk with the NHL Players’ Association about the rules of a draft. For example, there still isn’t much clarity on players who have no-move clauses and how an expansion draft would affect them. “It’s an issue that hasn’t been resolved in terms of how we intend to treat that. It’s something that we’re going to have to have a discussion with the Players’ Association,” Daly said. “But I didn’t have any certainty to provide (the general managers) on that issue, but I told them what the possibilities might be … It’s more how many players do they get to protect.” This would also be the NHL’s first expansion with a salary cap, which means some rules from prior drafts wouldn’t apply. The last time the NHL held an expansion draft was 2000.  “I don’t think that’s going to be an issue,” Ottawa Senators general manager Bryan Murray said. “I think the new teams, if there are new teams, will have certain obligations to pick certain players. But I don’t think we’ll be handicapped because of the cap.”  League general managers didn’t have much of an opinion on the presentation, but were happy to have clarity on the issue so they could prepare for potential scenarios. On Tuesday, Florida Panthers general manager Dale Tallon sounded worried about the possible draft. On Wednesday he sounded relieved. “Based on past experience it’s going to be fair and it’s going to be the same for everybody. It is what it is – if it happens,” Tallon said. “I can’t worry about stuff that might not happen either.” Some GMs even looked at the draft as a way to help their team by exposing players they were thinking of parting with at some point. “I’ve got a guy in mind right now,” Murray quipped. Toronto Maple Leafs
Jaromir Jagr isn't hung up on the Florida Panthers winning the Atlantic Division, but that might take care of itself if the team accomplishes what the veteran is aiming for. "Playing very good hockey going into the playoffs" will most certainly include beating the worst team in the league, and the Panthers play three of their final 12 games against Toronto beginning with Thursday night's matchup to conclude a three-game road trip. After Tuesday's 4-1 win in Montreal, the Panthers (39-22-9) again find themselves atop the Atlantic, with Boston a point back and Tampa Bay two behind. Continue to Article

Florida Panthers
Bouncing back from losses has been a key for the Florida Panthers this season, and they did it again on Tuesday night. A late collapse cost them a win a day earlier in a 3-2 loss to the Islanders in New York, but they made up for it with a 4-1 victory over the injury-riddled Montreal Canadiens. ''We're still a young team,'' veteran Jaromir Jagr said. Continue to Article

Florida Panthers
For 40 minutes, Jack Capuano stood behind the bench and seethed at his team's performance. ''Let the guys handle it,'' Capuano said, shortly after Cal Clutterbuck scored the tiebreaking goal with 1:39 remaining to cap New York's three-goal third period, lifting the Islanders to a 3-2 victory over the Florida Panthers on Monday night. Kyle Okposo and Josh Bailey scored earlier in the third as the Islanders scored all their goals in a 5 1/2-minute stretch after trailing 2-0 heading to the final period. Continue to Article
