South Carolina forward Sindarius Thornwell said the Gamecocks have no choice but to quickly shake off the disappointment of missing the NCAA Tournament and focus on the NIT. The Gamecocks expected to be prepping for a first-round NCAA contest after going 24-8 overall and 11-7 in the Southeastern. Instead, they were squeezed out of the 68-team field and given a No. 1 seed in the NIT, which they'll open at home Tuesday night against Big South Conference regular-season champion High Point. Georgia coach Mark Fox was thrilled with his team's performance Friday in upsetting third-seeded South Carolina 65-64 in the quarterfinals of the SEC tournament. Fox was so happy that he simultaneously clapped and jumped in the air, landed, threw a fist in the air, spun, lost his balance and hit the floor only to slap the floor, get up and celebrate some more. Coaches and players across the nation work hard all season for these March moments and Fox's raw emotion perfectly demonstrates that. [ Yahoo Tourney Pick’em is open. Sign up now and play for $50K ] Georgia won the game when guard J.J. Frazier hit one of two free throws with 2.1 seconds remaining. It capped a second-half comeback from 11 points down. It's the first time Georgia has won two games at the SEC tournament since 2008 when they won the title. The Bulldogs are the No. 6 seed and likely need to win the tournament this season to get into the NCAA field, which will be announced Sunday. Georgia faces an even tougher task Saturday when it faces Kentucky in the semifinals. The Wildcats beat the Bulldogs by 34 points earlier this season, tying for the worst loss in Fox's seven years in Athens. [ Wayne Selden's dunk on Baylor was the best of 2016 postseason ] “It’s a monumental challenge,” Fox told reporters after beating South Carolina. “We’ll have to come up with something because they whipped us pretty good the first time.” - - - - - - - [ Kyle Ringo is the assistant editor of The Dagger on Yahoo Sports.
