LSU freshman Ben Simmons is clearly one of the best players in the nation this season and the likely top pick in the NBA draft this summer, but he is not eligible for one of college basketball's most prestigious awards. Simmons was not among the 15 candidates announced Saturday for the John R. Wooden Award because LSU did not certify his eligibility for the award. According to a report by Jeff Goodman at ESPN , the school couldn't certify Simmons' eligibility for academic reasons.  Continue to Article

SMU's seniors would be playing their final game at Moody Coliseum on Thursday night even if the NCAA didn't levy probation that will keep them from participating in the American Athletic Conference and NCAA tournaments. Coach Larry Brown said Senior Night "is never fun," but it might be even more emotional considering the 24th-ranked Mustangs have only one more game remaining after facing Connecticut. The postseason ban stemming from an NCAA probe that revealed academic fraud significantly shortens the season for SMU (24-4, 12-4), which won its first 18 - including the first nine while Brown was suspended for lack of program control - and undoubtedly would make its second consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. UConn's new athletic director says he considers the Huskies' caliber of play at the level of a Power Five school. Dave Benedict, who has been serving as chief operating office at Auburn, was introduced Tuesday as the 12th athletic director at Connecticut.
