Butler
Slaying the sportsbook is a monstrous task. Some days bettors take up residence in a penthouse suite. Other times, they curl up in the nearest ditch, shirtless and toothless. In an attempt to avoid complete destitution, I will post my picks, whether profitable or penniless, through the NCAA tourney. Check out Wednesday's selections below: Seton Hall (21-7, 18-8 ATS) at Butler (19-9, 14-12)  – Several college basketball fans of various expertise levels have blasted the Big East, calling it an unworthy conference to receive such national recognition. Though a bit top-heavy thanks in large part to the spectacular seasons logged by Villanova and Xavier, questions loom among the league's remaining members.  Seton Hall, which steamrolled the Musketeers in Jersey last Sunday, answered the call and silenced its critics. Victorious in eight of its past nine games, the Pirates have earned their postseason booty. Angel Delgado's stellar paint play combined with Isaiah Whitehead's across-the-board contributions explain the spark. Also stout defensively (No. 13 nationally in D efficiency) and zeroing in from outside (40.9 3PT% last four games), the Hall is in a serious groove.  Butler, my current first team OUT, is in full desperation mode. With only three quality wins on its resume (Cincinnati, Purdue, Seton Hall), every game against a formidable opponent is of utmost importance. Its inside/outside scoring abilities, consistent conversions at the free-throw line and sparse committed turnovers have occasionally masked its defensive inefficiencies. If Tyler Wideman and Andrew Chrabascz protect the glass and Kelan Martin, Kellan Dunham and Roosevelt Jones attack inside, the Bulldogs should net a much needed resume-builder and their second W over The Hall this year.  Prediction: Butler (-4.5) 79 Seton Hall 72  Continue to Article

Seton Hall
Seton Hall not only wrote an apparent ticket to the NCAA Tournament, it now has to be considered a legitimate threat to win the Big East Conference postseason get-together. Desi Rodriguez had career-highs of 27 points and 12 rebounds and Seton Hall all but clinched its first NCAA Tournament berth in a decade with a stunning 90-81 victory over No. 5 Xavier on Sunday. ''We still have to be selected,'' said sophomore point guard Isaiah Whitehead, who added 22 points for the Pirates (21-7, 11-5). Continue to Article

Seton Hall
Five days after an emotional victory over the No. 1 ranked team in the country, Xavier endured a Villanova-induced hangover. The fifth-ranked Musketeers suffered a one-sided 90-81 loss at Seton Hall that could damage their chances to earn a No. 1 seed. Xavier surrendered the game's first nine points, trailed by 19 points at halftime and never mounted a serious charge in the second half. Too many first-half turnovers, too many ill-advised shots and too many missed box-outs doomed the Musketeers on the road against a rapidly improving Pirates team. If Xavier had crept up to the No. 1 line on mock brackets after Wednesday's big win, this loss will send them tumbling back to the No. 2 line for now. The Musketeers (25-4, 13-4) probably need to win the Big East tournament to have a realistic shot at a No. 1 seed now.  It was undoubtedly difficult for Xavier to get amped up for a road game at Seton Hall after ending a six-game losing streak against Villanova earlier in the week, but don't sell the Pirates short. They've won eight of their past nine games to improve to 21-7 overall, to lock up an NCAA tournament bid and to validate athletic director Patrick Lyons' decision to exercise patience with embattled head coach Kevin Willard last spring. In his first five seasons at Seton Hall, Willard never made the NCAA tournament or finished higher than a tie for seventh in the Big East. The 2014-15 Pirates lost 13 of their final 17 games after a 12-2 start, collapsing under the strain of locker room discord that led to the transfer of standout guards Sterling Gibbs and Jaren Sina. Willard's expensive buyout and strong relationship with Lyons bought him a one-year reprieve, and he has made it count. Superior chemistry, a blossoming sophomore class and a renewed commitment to defense and rebounding has helped Seton Hall ascend to the point that it has a chance to earn a No. 7 or 8 seed in the NCAA tournament with a strong finish.  Desi Rodriguez and Angel Delgado were Seton Hall's stars on Sunday, scoring 44 points, ripping down 20 rebounds and creating numerous second-chance opportunities. Seton Hall's top scorer Isaiah Whitehead put up 22 points, but he shot just 5-for-15 from the field and committed eight turnovers.  That Seton Hall could win with ease despite a below-average game from Whitehead shows the growth of the program this season. Xavier may have suffered a Villanova-induced hangover, but credit Seton Hall for taking full advantage. - - - - - - - Jeff Eisenberg is the editor of The Dagger on Yahoo Sports. Have a tip? Seton Hall
A statement-making win over the top team in the nation has Xavier aiming for not only its first Big East regular-season title, but also a top seed in the NCAA Tournament. After James Farr's career-best effort keyed a win in the first meeting, Xavier will chase its fifth consecutive victory overall and first in three visits to Prudential Center on Sunday. The Musketeers (25-3, 13-3) moved within a half game of No. 1 Villanova in the Big East with a 90-83 home win Wednesday before the Wildcats extended their lead with Saturday's victory.
