Oklahoma
The turning point in Saturday's top 10 showdown between West Virginia and Oklahoma was an ill-advised shot at a key juncture of the second half.  The crowd at the WVU Coliseum was roaring after the Mountaineers reeled off nine straight points to tie the game at 52 and came up with a key defensive stop. That's when reserve guard Tarik Phillip halted all that momentum when he badly missed a rushed pull-up 3-pointer with 22 seconds on the shot clock, the sort of attempt not even a lethal shooter should never take under the circumstances. Phillip was West Virginia's leading scorer on Saturday with 17 points, but his missed 3-pointer turned out to be his team's last chance to take the lead the rest of the game. Oklahoma reeled off a 9-0 run of its own immediately after that possession, providing the Sooners the cushion they needed to close out a critical 76-62 road victory. Oklahoma's win ended the third-ranked Sooners' first real slump of the season. They have fallen to the fringes of the Big 12 title race after dropping three of their last four games, surprising losses at Kansas State, and Texas Tech sandwiched around a narrow home loss to first-place Kansas. At 21-5 overall but just 9-5 in the Big 12, Oklahoma is still squarely in the mix for a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament but will need a lot of help to even earn a share of the Big 12 title. Kansas will hold a two-game lead on the Sooners if it wins today at Kansas State and West Virginia remains alone in second place despite Saturday's loss.  While the wasted possession by Philip was a momentum changer on Saturday, credit Oklahoma for seizing the opportunity. Ryan Spangler drew an over-the-back foul and sank two free throws. Dinjiyl Walker buried a 3-pointer when his man was slow to close out. Khadeem Lattin split a pair of free throws. And Buddy Hield capped the run by hitting a transition 3-pointer after West Virginia inexplicably lost track of him. Hield led Oklahoma with 29 points on 9-for-21 shooting, a strong performance that further cemented him as the favorite to win national player of the year. The Sooners also did an excellent job protecting the ball against the West Virginia pressure, turning it over just eight times. West Virginia will argue it should be nine Oklahoma turnovers because the referees appeared to miss a potential 10-second violation in the closing minutes when the Mountaineers were still within two scores. It may not have made a difference, but it certainly would have given West Virginia a glimmer of hope. - - - - - - - Jeff Eisenberg is the editor of The Dagger on Yahoo Sports. Have a tip? Baylor has a new scoring threat just in time for the Bears' stretch run in the Big 12. Johnathan Motley scored 24 points on 12-of-13 shooting Saturday and the 25th-ranked Bears rolled to an impressive 78-64 victory over No. 24 Texas, handing the Longhorns a rare home loss this season. It takes a team to win,'' Baylor coach Scott Drew said. Continue to Article

Oklahoma
West Virginia's aggressive defense forced Oklahoma into one of its worst shooting performances of the season and nearly helped it pull out a victory in Norman last month. Shutting down the third-ranked Sooners' three-guard lineup Saturday in Morgantown will be a much tougher task for the No. 10 Mountaineers if Daxter Miles Jr. and Jaysean Paige can't play through their injuries. West Virginia (20-6, 9-4 Big 12), though, could be catching Oklahoma (20-5, 8-5) at the perfect time. Continue to Article

Oklahoma
Buddy Hield and Oklahoma have bounced back from each of their defeats this season, but a meeting with Texas Tech on Wednesday night could make continuing that difficult. Oklahoma (20-4, 8-4 in Big 12) hasn't lost consecutive games since Jan. 19 and 24, 2015, and Hield is among the biggest reasons for that. Hield didn't have any such problems in a 91-67 rout of Texas Tech on Jan. 26, pouring in 30 points on 9-of-12 shooting and 5 of 8 from long range. Continue to Article

Texas
In 24 games against opponents other than Texas so far this year, West Virginia's aggressive trapping defense has forced just shy of 20 turnovers per game. The Longhorns have committed fewer than that in two games against the Mountaineers. Texas is Kryptonite for 10th-ranked West Virginia's vaunted press because the 24th-ranked Longhorns have an array of ball handling-savvy guards and a coach well versed in both implementing a pressure defense and attacking it. One month after Texas committed just eight turnovers in an upset victory over the Mountaineers in Morgantown, the Longhorns had just seven in Tuesday night's 85-78 win. Javan Felix and Isaiah Taylor have combined to log 132 minutes in two games against West Virginia, yet they have only committed a combined five turnovers during that stretch. On Tuesday, they consistently made excellent decisions and attacked when the opportunity presented itself, enabling Texas to build a lead as big as 16 points late in the second half.  A victory over West Virginia was crucial for a Texas team that suffered back-to-back losses at Oklahoma and Iowa State last week and faces a fourth consecutive ranked opponent on Saturday. Fans in Austin were wary of a Rick Barnes-esque February swoon, but the Longhorns showed poise and resilience in defeating a formidable opponent and improving to 13-1 this season at home.  Texas (17-9, 8-5) continues to exceed expectations for Shaka Smart's debut season despite the absence of injured center Cameron RIdley. The Longhorns are trending toward a No. 5 or 6 seed in the NCAA tournament and they still have a chance to improve on that if they can topple Baylor, Kansas or Oklahoma at home in the coming weeks. The success has come in an entirely different manner than how Smart achieved it at VCU. Smart was wise enough to realize he didn't have the personnel to play the swarming HAVOC-style defense that had been his trademark at his previous stop, so he slowed down the tempo and had the Longhorns employ a far more traditional approach. One of Texas' few glaring weaknesses so far this season has been poor outside shooting, but on Tuesday the Longhorns were able to punish West Virginia whenever it left shooters free. Eric Davis, who scored only seven points in his four previous games, swished three straight first-half threes and drilled another 3-pointer just before halftime. Connor Lammert also regained his outside shooting touch, finishing 3 of 6 from beyond the arc. West Virginia couldn't be as aggressive as usual on defense because it didn't have its full complement of players with Daxter Miles sidelined and Jaysean Paige coping with an ankle injury. Guard Tarik Phillip scored 19 points off the bench and center Devin Williams had 18 points and 12 rebounds, but Paige went scoreless and attempted only two shots. Coming into play Tuesday night, West Virginia was tied for first place in the Big 12 with Kansas. Now the Mountaineers (20-6, 9-4) are a game behind entering a crucial matchup with Oklahoma on Saturday in which the loser will be all but eliminated from the Big 12 title chase.   - - - - - - - Jeff Eisenberg is the editor of The Dagger on Yahoo Sports.
