Wisconsin
Even though Maryland's Diamond Stone was not ejected for the ugly flagrant foul he committed during his team's loss to Wisconsin on Saturday, the freshman center will not escape punishment. Maryland announced Monday it has suspended Stone for Thursday's game at Minnesota, which has yet to win a Big Ten game so far this season. The Big Ten subsequently announced Monday that it supports the school's decision. Stone received a flagrant foul on Saturday after he tangled with Wisconsin forward Vitto Brown under the basket and then forcefully pushed Brown's head into the floor as he climbed to his feet. Referees reviewed the play immediately after it occurred but assessed only a flagrant one foul on Stone and a technical foul on Wisconsin's Charlie Thomas for jawing with Maryland center after the play.  Maryland suspends freshman big man Diamond Stone for his actions vs. Wisconsin on Saturday. https://t.co/QaOhboglQF https://t.co/DpHrjTPevc — Big Ten Network (@BigTenNetwork) February 15, 2016 Maryland coach Mark Turgeon apologized to Brown and Wisconsin counterpart Greg Gard, calling Stone's conduct "a poor representation of the standards that we have established as a program at the University of Maryland." Stone echoed those sentiments in a statement released Monday by Maryland. "I want to apologize to Vitto Brown and the Wisconsin basketball team for my unacceptable behavior during Saturday’s game," Stone said. "I regret that I let the emotions of the game get the best of me. I let my team down and I accept full responsibility for my actions." The incident involving Stone and Brown adds to the bad blood between the highly touted center and the Badgers. Stone is a Milwaukee native recruited heavily by Wisconsin before he chose Maryland instead last spring.  Since arriving at Maryland, Stone has quickly established himself as one of the Big Ten's most productive front court players. He’s averaging 12.8 points on 56.9 percent shooting and he has made considerable strides defensively. - - - - - - - Jeff Eisenberg is the editor of The Dagger on Yahoo Sports. Have a tip? Wisconsin
Maryland tried just about everything to get the ball in the basket - driving to the hoop, shooting from the outside, working it inside and out. The second-ranked Terrapins went nearly 11 minutes without a field goal in the decisive first half, fell behind Wisconsin by 16 points and never recovered in a 70-57 loss Saturday night. Maryland (22-4, 10-3 Big Ten) fell out of a first-place tie in the conference and had its school-record home winning streak snapped at 27 games. Continue to Article

Wisconsin
Wisconsin fans already had ill-will toward Maryland freshman Diamond Stone before Saturday for choosing to be a Terrapin instead of a Badger out of high school after growing up in Milwaukee. Stone gave them a legitimate reason to dislike him when he fell to the floor with Wisconsin forward Vitto Brown late in the first half and intentionally pushed Brown's head into the floor as he got up. Perhaps Stone was annoyed by his performance to that point or the fact that his second-ranked team was losing by 16 points to an unranked opponent. Wisconsin went on to post a huge upset 70-57 on the road, boosting its hopes for an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament next month. [ John Calipari ejected less than three minutes into Saturday's win ] The unsportsmanlike display irked Brown and his teammates leading to some minor pushing and shoving. The Big Ten officiating crew reviewed the play and somehow decided it was not a flagrant 2 foul, which would have meant ejection for Stone. Instead, officials awarded both teams technicals and allowed Stone to play on. Wisconsin's Charlie Thomas was charged with the technical foul for the Badgers. Of course that only made it worse for Wisconsin fans. [ Grayson Allen hits buzzer-beater robbing UVA of rare win at Duke ] Brown got the last laugh with the victory. He led the Badgers with a season-best 21 points and knocked down three 3-pointers for the second straight game. Prior to this two-game stretch, Brown had hit more than one 3-pointer in a game only once all season.  Stone finished the game with 10 points and four blocks but just one rebound and saw his team's 27-home winning streak come to an end. - - - - - - - [ Kyle Ringo is the assistant editor of The Dagger on Yahoo Sports.
