Iona
Junior forward Jordan Washington has been suspended two games by Iona College for his slapping a Monmouth player in the scuffle that broke out after Friday night's game. The 6-foot-8 Washington was clearly seen on tape slapping Monmouth's Chris Brady after the Hawks' 110-102 victory at Iona. Something happened during the handshake line and suddenly there was pushing and shoving between the teams during which Washington reached out and made contact with Brady's face. Continue to Article

Iona
An ugly postgame incident Friday night overshadowed a high scoring, thoroughly entertaining clash between two of the MAAC's strongest teams.  Tempers flared after Monmouth's 110-102 victory over Iona when players from both sides exchanged words while going through the postgame handshake line. The pushing and shoving reached its peak when Iona forward Jordan Washington slapped Monmouth center Chris Brady across the face. Iona will be without Jordan Washington for at least a game or two because of this. Dumb: pic.twitter.com/qlZGLIGKQO — Ray Curren (@currenrr) January 16, 2016 The teams didn't finally leave the floor until yellow-clad security guards intervened. Monmouth coach King Rice blew a kiss to the Iona crowd before he left and then expressed his displeasure in his postgame news conference. "Chris' nose is about this swollen right now, so if [Washington] slapped Chris that hard, man he should maybe try MMA," Rice told reporters after the game . "The kid's nose is this big downstairs right now. So I don't know if it was a smack or what it was, but big Brady's nose is pretty messed up right now." It's unclear what specifically caused the postgame fracas, but the game itself had been chippy from start to finish. There were three technical fouls including one on Brady for an aggressive foul on Washington as both were vying for a rebound. Jordan Washington rebound draws flagrant foul, tech. Proctor4-4 Fts. Iona eliminated Monmouth in the MAAC tournament last season in a game most memorable for a heated exchange of words between Rice and Iona coach Tim Cluess after a second-half collision between two players. Rice later apologized for instigating that incident, but Cluess generated some headlines earlier this week with his criticism of Monmouth's oft-discussed bench celebrations. . @ICGaels HC Tim Cluess on @MUHawks bench: Are they on the team? I didn't know if they were on the team or wearing uniforms as cheerleaders — Dan Koob (@DanKoob) January 13, 2016 . @ICGaels Cluess continued: I've never seen them on the court doing anything, so to me, they're not basketball players. — Dan Koob (@DanKoob) January 13, 2016 The Monmouth bench had plenty to celebrate Friday night as guard Justin Robinson scored 29 points and the Hawks (13-4, 5-1) moved within a half game of first-place Iona (9-7, 6-1). A.J. English had 45 points to lead the Gaels, but they could not generate enough defensive stops to stay unbeaten in league play.  The two teams will meet again Feb. 19 at Monmouth. Expect plenty of points and plenty of emotion. - - - - - - - Jeff Eisenberg is the editor of The Dagger on Yahoo Sports. Have a tip? Email him at daggerblog@yahoo.com or follow him on Twitter!
