Marvin Benard attended Los Angeles Harbor College from 1990 to 1991 and played baseball there before transferring to another college and getting drafted by the San Francisco Giants in 1992. Less than a week after his mother died, Shildt was honored for piloting the St. Louis Cardinals back into the playoffs, narrowly beating Craig Counsell of the Milwaukee Brewers to win NL Manager of the Year. Shildt earned the award in his first full season on the job, even though Counsell received more first-place votes (13-10) from the Baseball Writers' Association of America. Cavan Biggio and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. were among the lone bright spots for the Toronto Blue Jays in 2019 and the league certainly took notice. Biggio, who was called up from Triple-A on May 24, finished fifth in American League Rookie of the Year voting.
