It’s not a secret that Terry Collins is going to be out as Mets manager when his contract is up after Sunday’s game. The short version: team president Jeff Wilpon and general manager Sandy Alderson have almost no relationship with Collins, who they feel stopped carrying out their vision and stopped listening to them some time ago. On multiple occasions, Carig reports, they wanted to fire Collins, but the elder Wilpon has stepped in to protect Collins, who he likes. Continue to Article

Mets head trainer Ray Ramirez will be back in his current job through at least next season, multiple sources have told NY Post beat reporter Mike Puma. Ramirez was initially hired by Omar Minaya after the 2004 season. Earlier this month, Mets GM Sandy Alderson told Puma that the Mets are likely to continue working with current senior advisor for strength and conditioning Mike Barwis. Mets OF Yoenis Cespedes, who ended his season early with a second hamstring injury, recently told reporters he has a close working relationship with Barwis. The two spent several weeks together this past winter working a strength training program for the outfielder's upper body. However, due to his injuries in 2017, Continue to Article

New York Mets
All season, the Mets had a significant problem at the catcher position. Travis d'Arnaud and Kevin Plawecki were each batting under .240 with an OPS under .700 at the end of August and minimal history of success to look back on, particularly in Plawecki's case. But both have had a surge of production that may help simplify an issue for a team facing a very complicated offseason. On September 1, d'Arnaud was sitting on a .232/.281/.394 slash line over 306 plate appearancesm -- a deeply disappointing season in which he finally seemed to be capable of staying healthy for a long stretch. Since the beginning of the month, though, he has been on fire, batting .315/.367/.741 with six home runs in 60 Continue to Article

New York Mets
With just three games left in a lost season for the New York Mets, the biggest question facing the club is who will be managing the team when spring training rolls around. Terry Collins' contract is up at season's end and the team has given no indication it is trying to extend his deal. Collins, 68, has said he doesn't plan on retiring, leaving a decision on his status up to the front office. According to a Newsday report, owner Fred Wilpon repeatedly protected Collins from being fired, even as his son, Jeff Wilpon, the team's COO, and general manager Sandy Alderson sought his dismissal on several occasions during Collins' seven-year tenure. The Mets followed up their 2015 trip to the World Series Continue to Article

New York Mets
The Mets had a three-and-a-half-game lead over the Phillies in the NL East on Sept. 10, 2008, but lost 10 of their final 17 games and were eliminated from NL East contention with two games left in the season. The Wild Card remained a possibility until -- for the second consecutive year -- the Marlins ended New York's season during the year's final game, winning 4-2. The loss, coupled with a win by the Brewers earlier in the day, rewarded Milwaukee the National League Wild Card, officially making September 28, 2008 the final game ever played in Shea Stadium. I recently re-stumbled on this picture, which still hurts me when I see it...Sept. 28, 2008: David Wright looks back one last time at Shea Continue to Article
