The performance of several younger players, led by Magnus Paajarvi, Ivan Barbashev and Zach Sanford, has helped the Blues deal with the absence of Paul Stastny, Robby Fabbri, Jori Lehtera and Dmitrij Jaskin. Paarjarvi, who had two goals in Thursday night's 4-1 win over Vancouver, and Barbashev spent much of this season playing in the minor leagues, as did Sanford, acquired from Washington in the February trade that sent Kevin Shattenkirk to the Capitals. Sissons scored a goal, and Pekka Rinne made 24 saves to lead the Nashville Predators over the Calgary Flames 3-1 on Thursday night. As mentioned the other day, it’s not necessarily that we need to be watching which team is or isn’t going to make the playoffs at this point. As Jarmo Kekalainen bemoaned the other day, a team with one of the three or four best records in the league is guaranteed to be bounced out in the first round of the Metro divisional playoffs, and another will probably go in the second. T.J. Oshie is leading the Washington Capitals in goals, but Alex Ovechkin is again leading them into the playoffs. Ovechkin had a goal and two assists as the NHL-leading Capitals beat the surging Calgary Flames 4-2 Tuesday night and snapped goaltender Brian Elliott's franchise-record winning streak at 11 games. While Oshie reaching 30 goals in a season for the first time in a contract year led Ovechkin to proclaim, ''Ka-ching,'' the Russian superstar was the best player on the ice with 11 shots in one of his most dominant performances in recent months.
