When a collision knocked Mike Smith's mask off, the Arizona Coyotes goaltender was less than pleased when he was told a few minutes later he had no choice but to leave the game. One of the NHL's central spotters in New York made that call to trainer Jason Serbus, and in accordance with the league's concussion protocol, Smith's departure was mandatory. The playoffs are still a month away, and teams are already not reacting well to concussion protocol for goalies, which is why it's one of the topics that general managers are expected to discuss at their annual March meeting beginning Monday in Boca Raton, Florida. The Florida Panthers, nearly crippled with injuries before the season even started with the losses of Jonathan Huberdeau and Nick Bjugstad, had finally gotten healthy ... until Thursday. The Panthers (29-23-11) return home Saturday night to face the Dallas Stars (25-29-10). At this same pace, neither team would be in the playoffs, and now the Panthers -- who are running out of time with just 19 games remaining -- must carry on without Luongo, likely for at least one week. Los Angeles Kings right wing Jarome Iginla skates during the second period of the team’s NHL hockey game against the Toronto Maple Leafs. In 2013, the Calgary Flames made a tough decision and dealt Jarome Iginla at the NHL trade deadline. The deal netted the Flames two prospects and a first-round pick and was a pretty good haul for a 35-year-old rental player, though a relatively pitiable one given how important Iginla had been to the franchise over his career. Valtteri Filppula hasn't practiced yet with Philadelphia and barely even had time to talk to his new teammates and coaches. Filppula scored in regulation and Jakub Voracek and Jordan Weal netted goals in the shootout to lead the Philadelphia Flyers to a 2-1 victory over the Florida Panthers on Thursday night.
