The Washington Capitals won the Kevin Shattenkirk sweepstakes, such as it was, in a trade with the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday. To that end, the Capitals traded their first-round pick in 2017 and (hilariously complicated) conditional picks for Shattenkirk, shipping along forwards Zach Sanford and Brad Malone to the St. Louis Blues as well. In the process, they kept Shattenkirk away from the New York Rangers (until July 1 at least) and away from their archrivals the Pittsburgh Penguins, who apparently were in on Shattenkirk until it was obvious the ante was too high. Martin Hanzal is a nice player. After three years getting above 0.60 points per game, he’s dipped back to 0.51 in 51 games with the Arizona Coyotes this season, his 16 goals led the team. The Coyotes traded forwards Martin Hanzal and Ryan White and a 2017 fourth round choice to the Minnesota Wild in exchange for a 2017 first round draft choice, a 2018 second round draft choice and a 2019 conditional fourth round draft choice. The Los Angeles Kings were desperate for a spark, staring down their second shutout loss to the rival Anaheim Ducks in less than a week and third of the season, just 20 minutes away from ceding more ground in their desperate chase for a wild card in the Western Conference. The return of goalie Jonathan Quick from a groin injury hadn't provided it, nor had Jeff Carter's first fight since joining Los Angeles. The Arizona Coyotes have struggled of late to win on a consistent basis, which doesn't exactly make for good timing to be facing the Chicago Blackhawks. The Coyotes are coming off a 3-2 win over the Anaheim Ducks, but are just 5-4-1 in their last 10 games. The Blackhawks used a five-point effort (three goals, two assists) from captain Jonathan Toews to knock off the Western Conference-leading Minnesota Wild 5-3 on Tuesday night as the Blackhawks won for the seventh time in their last eight games.
