Back-to-back wins have been hard to come by for the Buffalo Sabres, but they'll have a prime opportunity to buck that trend when the struggling Colorado Avalanche come to town. Following goalie Robin Lehner's rant on Sunday -- when Lehner criticized his teammates for not following the coaches' gameplan in a 4-2 loss to the Vancouver Canucks -- the Sabres (24-23-10) responded accordingly on Tuesday in a 3-2 win over Lehner's former team, the Ottawa Senators. It was a psychological effect, more than anything else. When you’re winning, as the Columbus Blue Jackets were for a good chunk of the season, there’s little impetus for fans, players, coaches, or executives to question the process by which those wins were gained. In fact, even outside observers who should know better become tempted to explain away the team’s more glaring problems and instead highlight why what they’ve done right is capital-S Sustainable. The NHL announced on Thursday that Florida Panthers defenseman Keith Yandle has been fined $2,000 for embellishing a slash from Ottawa Senators defenseman Dion Phaneuf on Jan. 31. The Panthers won the game, 6-5. As the video shows, Phaneuf slashed the stick of Yandle, and then Yandle dropped to one knee and took his glove off his stick to feign injury, and then he turned around and slashed Phaneuf’s stick.
