The life-affirming play of Joel Embiid and a surprisingly solid 21-34 record have eclipsed one clear negative for the Philadelphia 76ers — Ben Simmons, the top pick in June’s draft and a potential superstar, has not played a single game for the team this season. While the absence of Simmons has not been felt especially strongly in the team’s on-court performance (relative to expectations, at least), going through more than two-thirds of the season without him has held back some of their long-term plans. The New Orleans Pelicans played the Phoenix Suns, so of course the game went down to the wire. Anthony Davis scored six consecutive New Orleans points, including the go-ahead rebound basket with 40.3 seconds to play, and the Pelicans escaped with a 110-108 victory Monday night. Although still soul searching to find the right mental perspective on the court, DeMarcus Cousins continues to deliver big numbers for the Sacramento Kings. Cousins had 28 points, 14 rebounds and seven assists for the Kings, who beat the New Orleans Pelicans 105-99 on Sunday night for their third straight victory. Two teams searching for a turn in momentum meet Monday night at Moda Center when the Atlanta Hawks (31-23) square off against the Portland Trail Blazers (23-31). Atlanta has lost two of its last three games, including an excruciating 108-107 setback at Sacramento on Friday night in which Tim Hardaway felt he was fouled on an attempted game-winning shot just before the final horn.
