Jeff Carter scored two goals and Peter Budaj earned his sixth shutout of the season in the Kings' fourth consecutive victory, 5-0 over Colorado on Wednesday night. Not even a three-game absence because of an upper-body injury could slow down Jakob Silfverberg during his breakthrough season. Silfverberg scored two goals, John Gibson made 28 saves and the Anaheim Ducks wrapped up a three-game season sweep of the struggling Colorado Avalanche with a 5-1 victory Tuesday night. There’s been a lot of horrible on the Colorado Avalanche this season at 13-31-2 for 28 points, and Semyon Varlamov has been a significant part of it. A League-leading 17 losses, a goals-saved-above-average of minus-11, which continues a three-year downward trend from his incredible plus-27.45 in that category during is Vezina-finalist, Patrick Roy-aggrandizing 2013-14 campaign. Varlamov was shut down by the Avalanche last week ahead of the All-Star break to heal up, but the team announced on Thursday that he’s actually been shut down for the rest of this lost season due to hip surgery to repair his injured groin.
