Jed Lowrie tied his career high with four hits, doubling in the 11th inning and scoring the go-ahead run on Mark Canha's single to lead the Oakland Athletics over the New York Yankees 3-2 on Tuesday night. After two more scoreless innings from the Yankees' dynamic duo of Dellin Betances and Andrew Miller, rookie Johnny Barbato (1-1) pitched a perfect 10th. Lowrie doubled into the right-field corner against Barbato with one out in the 11th, then took third on a groundout by Khris Davis, who had struck out in his previous three at-bats. Jacoby Ellsbury was out of the Yankees' starting lineup against Oakland on Tuesday night after four defensive mistakes during the first two weeks of the season and with New York facing left-hander Eric Surkamp. Left fielder Brett Gardner took over as New York's leadoff hitter, and right-handed-hitting Aaron Hicks started in center. Ellsbury backpedaled on J.D. Martinez's flyball and allowed it to drop a few feet in from of him for a single at Detroit on April 8, then four days later at Toronto got a poor jump on Jose Bautista's liner, allowing it to go off the wall on a hop for a two-run double. A slump-busting win provided a reminder that the New York Yankees could prove dangerous if they can get enough length out of their starting pitchers. Masahiro Tanaka pitched seven innings and gave up two earned runs while Dellin Betances and Andrew Miller struck out all six batters they faced as New York (5-6) beat Seattle 4-3 on Sunday, ending a four-game losing streak.
