Gerrit Cole carried his splendid September into an outstanding October and Alex Bregman handed fans chanting MVP the mighty swing they craved and the Houston Astros survived a wild ninth inning to beat the Tampa Bay Rays 3-1 on Saturday night for a 2-0 lead in their AL Division Series. Cole, 5-0 with a 1.07 ERA in six starts last month, set an Astros postseason record with 15 strikeouts in 7 2/3 scoreless innings to win his franchise-record 17th straight decision. The 15 strikeouts tied for third-most in a postseason game, the highest total since Roger Clemens had 15 in the 2000 AL Championship Series for the New York Yankees against Seattle. A lineup filled with savages, as Yankees manager Aaron Boone might say. A lineup that features a No. 8 hitter who can hit a grand slam that all but ended a series like former three-hole hitter Didi Gregorius did Saturday night. The type of lineup that has pounded the Minnesota Twins into submission to grab a command 2-0 series lead after Saturday's 8-2 win in the Bronx, extending the Yankees winning streak against Minnesota to 12 games. The feel-good story of the Uber driver-turned-big league pitcher came to a screeching halt Saturday when the New York Yankees tagged him from the get-go in an 8-2 rout, putting Minnesota in a serious jam in the AL Division Series. "Nerves were fine," Dobnak said. A week removed from his in-season wedding in Maryland, and with new bride Aerial in the stands, Dobnak soaked in the mocking, taunting cheers of "Uber, Uber" from the bleacher crowd at Yankee Stadium when he limbered up in the outfield before Game 2. I don't know what's more likely: that major league relief pitchers are just wired differently, so that while the rest of us are still thinking about the time in fourth grade we spelled “tomorrow” wrong on the white board they've already forgotten about a disastrous outing that cost their club a playoff game (against the New York Yankees, of all teams); or that they just know better than to say so if it's still gnawing away at them in the clubhouse after losing a 4-hour-and-15-minute marathon. The last time the Minnesota Twins won a postseason game was Oct. 5, 2004. That was also in New York, but the Yankees went on to win that series. Continue to Article

There were five home runs, 25 strikeouts, 14 walks, 13 pitchers and just 15 hits. The New York Yankees' 10-4 win over the Minnesota Twins in their AL Division Series opener on Friday was the epitome of what Major League Baseball has evolved into in 2019. A 4-hour, 15-minute meeting between power-packed offenses was dominated by the Three True Outcomes — homers, walks, strikeouts — when the defense is superfluous other than the pitcher and catcher.
