It's September, so the baseball games matter a little more. A new leader has emerged in the American League wild-card race. The Oakland Athletics, by virtue of their third straight victory against the Houston Astros, have leapfrogged the Tampa Bay Rays into sole possession of the top wild-card position. Freddy Galvis hit a grand slam with two outs in the seventh inning as the Cincinnati Reds rallied to beat the host Seattle Mariners 11-5 on Thursday night. Curt Casali and Eugenio Suarez added two-run homers in the eighth as the Reds avoided being swept in the three-game interleague series. No one was giving up any ground in the National League wild-card race as the Chicago Cubs, Milwaukee Brewers, New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies all won in MLB action. Thursday's victories mean the quartet are now separated by just two games in the race for the second NL wild-card spot. The Cubs defeated the San Diego Padres 4-1, the Brewers edged the Miami Marlins 3-2, the Mets crushed the Arizona Diamondbacks 11-1 and the Phillies were too good for the Atlanta Braves 9-5. There's a high degree of probability the overwhelming majority of diehard baseball fans won't remember exactly where they were when Orioles second baseman Jonathan Villar took Dodgers' lefty reliever Caleb Ferguson deep for a go-ahead, three-run homer in the seventh inning on Wednesday evening. The league-wide proliferation in over-the-fence power has been the prevailing narrative of the 2019 campaign. From a pure fantasy perspective, the central question moving forward is whether Major League Baseball will institute changes to the baseball manufacturing process with the goal of reducing over-the-fence power next season, or if the current league-wide power environment is here to stay for good. Coming into Wednesday's games, MLB teams needed to hit a mere 21 homers to tie the record and 22 to break it. The Oakland Athletics' Marcus Semien tied the record with his home run off Houston Astros starter Jose Urquidy and then a few minutes later Villar broke it. Here is a look at some staggering home run numbers from the 2019 season: - In 2013, one team hit 200 or more home runs. Continue to Article

Alonso coordinated the purchase and production of custom 9/11 cleats for Mets players to wear on the 18th anniversary of the terrorist attacks. The shoes were painted red, white and blue and included "We will never forget" and lettering for first responder units. Following the Mets' 9-0 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks, Alonso said he wanted to design hats the Mets could wear on the field, but that idea was rejected by Major League Baseball, which hasn't allowed the Mets to wear first responder hats during games since 2001. Alonso ordered custom 9/11 cleats for all of his New York Mets' teammates to wear during Wednesday night's game at Citi Field as a way to commemorate the victims and first-responders from that tragic day 18 years ago. It was the latest commendable act from one of baseball's brightest young stars. Of course, there was also the absolute ridiculousness that came with it. Continue to Article
