Eloy Jimenez and Jose Abreu homered and Ivan Nova pitched 5 2/3 shutout innings to earn his first home victory of the season as the Chicago White Sox defeated the Chicago Cubs 3-1 on Sunday. Jimenez's 16th homer was his second this season against his original organization, a two-run shot to straightaway center in the fourth inning that provided all the offense the White Sox would need. Abreu added a solo homer in the fifth, his 21st of the season, as the White Sox closed the first half of the campaign with their sixth win in nine games. Continue to Article

It's when the ball starts buzzing batter's heads that the Chicago Cubs manager thinks the increasingly thin line between aggressive and dangerous can get a little too blurry. On Thursday, Maddon thought Pittsburgh starter Jordan Lyles crossed it. Maddon walked toward the Pittsburgh dugout before being restrained by plate umpire Joe West and Chicago star Kris Bryant, at one point unleashing a pretty spry spin move for a 65-year-old former high school football player in an effort to get away. Kris Bryant highlighted his four-hit performance with a homer, and he scored three runs as the visiting Chicago Cubs averted a four-game sweep with an 11-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday. Robel Garcia, who was playing in his second career game, joined Willson Contreras in belting a homer among their three hits, and Albert Almora Jr. also went deep as the Cubs moved into a tie with Milwaukee atop the National League Central with 46-42 records. Tempers flared in the fourth inning as Chicago manager Joe Maddon was ejected after All-Star shortstop Javier Baez was nearly hit by a pitch from Pittsburgh starter Jordan Lyles (5-5), who had surrendered three home runs. A minor league affiliate of the Chicago Cubs briefly waded into political territory Wednesday, then quickly backed away. The Double-A Tennessee Smokies apologized after poking at quarterback-turned-activist Colin Kaepernick in an attempt to make light of the recent controversy surrounding the "Betsy Ross flag." Nike intended to release a Fourth of July themed shoe this week with the 13-star American flag, but it scrapped the plan after Kaepernick, one of the company's commercial spokesmen, came out in opposition. A Chicago Cubs minor league affiliate baseball team has apologized for mocking former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick's alleged role in nixing a new Nike sneaker that was emblazoned with the flag of the original 13 colonies. The Tennessee Smokies responded a day after Nike recalled the shoe, reportedly because Kaepernick advised that the flag image was offensive and a reminder of slavery days. Kaepernick was the first NFL player to kneel during the National Anthem, allegedly because he was protesting police violence against African Americans. Continue to Article
