Marvin Benard attended Los Angeles Harbor College from 1990 to 1991 and played baseball there before transferring to another college and getting drafted by the San Francisco Giants in 1992. Mostly because, over time, we've sort of figured out that what teams and team spokesmen say about potential free agent signings is rather pointless and oftentimes actively misleading. The latest example comes courtesy of the San Diego Padres. The San Diego Padres were famous for wearing multiple variations of brown and mustard yellow from their inception as a major league franchise in 1969 through 1984. After that they went with only slight brown or gold accents and then just blue and orange until 2003. Stephen Strasburg, the 2019 World Series MVP for the Washington Nationals, reportedly decided to opt out of his current deal with the team Saturday to become a free agent. Strasburg was set to earn $100 million with the Nationals over the next four seasons thanks to a back-loaded seven-year, $175 million deal he signed in the middle of the 2016 season. Ron Wotus will have to wait a little bit longer for his first major league managerial job. The Athletic's Andrew Baggarly reported Saturday that the Giants have told the longtime coach that he is no longer in the running for their open job.
