Toronto Blue Jays closer Ken Giles is day-to-day with nerve inflammation in his right elbow, which stems from a massage he underwent during the all-star break, manager Charlie Montoyo told reporters Saturday. Many speculated Giles wasn't called upon to protect a two-run lead in the ninth inning against the New York Yankees because he had been traded before the deadline, but that wasn't the case. New York Yankees ace Luis Severino, sidelined since spring training, could begin a throwing program next week, but his return appears to be anything but imminent. General manager Brian Cashman said Severino will need "six weeks or more" to work himself up to being ready to come off the injured list and there's a good chance he won't be ready to resume a full-time starting job.
