Multiple reporters (including Sportsnet’s Shawn McKenzie) pass along word that William Nylander announced that he’ll play in the Maple Leafs’ next game, which takes place against the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday. To make things more delightful – and maybe excite a dork or two in advance – Auston Matthews hasn’t missed a beat since returning from injury. Thursday will only represent Matthews’ fourth game back in the lineup, yet he’s been making up for lost time, as the American star has five goals and two assists for seven points in three contests. Before having the chance to run him through a full practice, Mike Babcock will apparently slide William Nylander into the Toronto Maple Leafs lineup. Having already missed 14 games with a shoulder injury, Toronto Maple Leafs forward Auston Matthews wasn't going to let a little fatigue prevent him from jumping into the play for one last rush. ''Lucky to get it off with a little bit of time remaining,'' said Matthews, who scored twice and added an assist to give him five goals and seven points in three games since returning to the lineup. The Toronto Maple Leafs traded forward Josh Leivo to the Vancouver Canucks on Monday for forward Michael Carcone. Leivo, 25, has played in 27 games this season and tallied six points (four goals, two assists). In six seasons with Toronto Continue to Article

Toronto
The Toronto Maple Leafs and William Nylander have agreed to a six-year contract extension with an average annual value of $6.96 million. The months-long stand-off between Nylander’s camp and Maple Leafs management came to a dramatic conclusion, as TSN’s Darren Dreger reported the signing at 4:57 p.m. EST — three minutes before the restricted free agent signing deadline. If the 22-year-old didn’t have his shiny new contract inked and approved by the league by 5 p.m. EST, he would’ve been ineligible to suit up for Toronto, or any NHL team, this season.
