Nearly 20 years into the iconic franchise’s history, there’s no escaping the “Madden Curse.” Since Garrison Hearst broke his ankle in 1998, shortly after starring on the cover of Madden NFL 99, most of the players who “starred” on the game’s cover have suffered an injury the following season. This season, the curse set its sights on New England Patriots QB Tom Brady, whose Madden NFL 18 cover selection came hot off of his fifth Super Bowl win in 2017. Thanks to Brady, the Patriots are the first NFL team to have two players selected for the cover back-to-back: Brady’s teammate, tight end Ron Gronkowski, fell victim to the curse, suffer multiple injuries last season after his appearance on the cover of Madden 17. ESPN has many hours of pregame content to churn out on Super Bowl Sunday, and what sounded like a bombshell report this morning was part of it: Speculation that Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and coach Bill Belichick could both retire after tonight’s game. As Dianna Russini of ESPN put it, “many in the league have been hearing” that Super Bowl LII “could possibly be both Bill Belichick and Tom Brady’s final games. Despite a previous ESPN report indicating that friction between Belichick and Brady had grown palpable in the locker room during the regular season, both Belichick and Brady have said they’re on the same page, and Patriots owner Robert Kraft has said he thinks he has the best coach in NFL history and the best quarterback in NFL history and doesn’t want either of them to go anywhere.
