Tommy Hawkins, the first black basketball player to earn All-America honors at Notre Dame and who played for the Los Angeles Lakers during a 10-year NBA career, died Wednesday. He was 80. Hawkins died in his sleep at home in Malibu, son Kevin told The Associated Press. He had been in good health and had lay down to rest, his oldest son said. Hawkins graduated from Notre Dame in 1959 after playing three years on the basketball team. He had 1,318 career rebounds for the longest-standing record in Fighting Irish history. Umpire Angel Hernandez has shaken hands on the field with Ian Kinsler, a day after the Detroit Tigers second baseman said the veteran ump should find another job. Hernandez was working second base Wednesday night for the finale of Detroit's series at Texas. When Kinsler took his position for the bottom of the first inning, there appeared to be a few words shared between the two before Hernandez walked up to Kinsler and shook his hand, and then briefly put his hand on the second baseman's shoulder. Detroit Tigers second baseman Ian Kinsler said that veteran umpire Angel Hernandez should find another job, after he was tossed from Monday's game against the Texas Rangers. In the fifth inning of that 5-2 loss, Kinsler questioned two pitches during his at-bat. Kinsler was immediately tossed and when Tigers manager Brad Ausmus came out of the dugout to defend Kinsler he was run too by Hernandez, who has been a major league umpire for almost 25 years.
