Chicago White Sox
The White Sox went so far outside of the box with draft pick Sam Abbott that they wound up in the pool. Whereas 34 of the team’s 40 picks were spent on college players with proven track records, the White Sox bought a lottery ticket with a potentially huge payoff when they selected the three-time Washington high school water polo MVP in the eighth round of last week’s draft. The White Sox know they possess a work in progress in Abbott, who officially signed with the club on Monday and reported to the team’s facility in Glendale, Ariz. But scouts and club officials feel if Abbott can ever tap into the potential he put on display in a workout earlier this month that gambling on the 6-foot-5, 230-pounder would be worth the risk. “This is one of the most unique stories we’ve ever drafted,” amateur scouting director Nick Hostetler said. Since returning from a sore thumb that landed him on the seven-day disabled list, Charlotte Knights second baseman Yoan Moncada, baseball’s No. 1 prospect according to MLBPipeline.com, had struggled at the plate. Moncada batted .143 in his first 18 games back, a far cry from the .331 average he posted in 34 games before the injury. Once imminent, a return to the Majors seemed further away than at any other point this season. But if the last five games of Charlotte’s six-game homestand against the Louisville Bats and Indianapolis Indians are any indication, Moncada finally seems to be turning a corner. During that span, Moncada went 9-for-21 with a home run, five RBIs and six runs scored. The Continue to Article

Minnesota Twins
The Cleveland Indians have had the Twins right where they wanted them for this pivotal midseason series. In Minnesota, actually. Lonnie Chisenhall hit two home runs in the second game after Jose Ramirez went deep twice in the opener, and the Indians took over first place in the AL Central by sweeping a doubleheader from the Twins with 9-3 and 6-2 victories on Saturday. "It was fun. It's a long day, but I thought our guys carried the enthusiasm throughout," Indians manager Terry Francona said. The Indians have won seven straight games in Minnesota and are 7-2 this season overall against the Twins, whose 38-day stretch in first place ended in anticlimactic fashion. They're 14-23 this year at Target Continue to Article

James Shields not only got the physical preparation he needed, but hes confident he received the mental work necessary, too. The White Sox starter is set to return off a two-month long disabled list stint on Sunday and thinks his three-start rehab assignment has him amply prepared. Shields strained his lat muscle during an April 16 outing. Continue to Article

Chicago White Sox
TORONTO -- Four White Sox went deep on Saturday afternoon, including Mike Pelfrey. The starting pitcher’s six innings pitched is tied for his longest outing of the season. Pelfrey provided the White Sox with only their fifth quality start in 25 games to propel them to a 5-2 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays in front of 47,171 at the Rogers Centre. Todd Frazier, Matt Davidson and Jose Abreu all homered for the White Sox, who won for the sixth time in eight tries. While the offense provided several rounds of fireworks, Pelfrey did the rest. Though the White Sox have limited his innings total, the veteran right-hander has provided them with about all they could ask for a player who signed a minor-league Continue to Article
