Cincinnati Reds
The Phils, who entered the day with the worst record in the majors, pulled off a 4-3, walk-off win over the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday (see Instant Replay). The Phils won it on a hit by Tommy Joseph after Aaron Altherr made a heads-up baserunning play to advance to second on a wild pitch that bounced just a few feet away from Reds catcher Tucker Barnhart. The win was just the Phillies' sixth in the last 27 games inching them out baseball's basement but it was their second in the last three and both of them have been walk-off specials with Joseph delivering the winning run with a single up the middle. Jim Bunning of Kentucky died on Friday at 85, seven months after suffering a stroke, six years after departing the U.S. Senate, and 45-plus years after he finished a pro baseball career that would land him in the Hall of Fame in 1996. What a pitcher Bunning was: The six-foot-three righty won 224 games, struck out 2,855 batters (second-most in history on the occasion of Bunning's retirement), and made the all-star team nine times. Win-loss record was everything back then, and Bunning's 17-15 figure for a fifth-place club did not wow the voters. Continue to Article

Cincinnati Reds
Phillies manager Pete Mackanin called for a little powwow after his club suffered a 5-2 loss to the Cincinnati Reds on Friday night (see Instant Replay). The loss was the Phillies' 21st in the last 26 games. Cincinnati starting pitcher Tim Adleman entered the game with a 6.19 ERA, but he pitched like an ace in holding the Phillies to just a first-inning single over his eight shutout innings (see story). Cincinnati Reds
Aaron Nola struggled and the Phillies' offense slumbered in a 5-2 loss to the Cincinnati Reds on Friday night at Citizens Bank Park. The Phillies had just one hit through eight innings and three overall in losing for the 21st time in the last 26 games. Over their last six games, five of which have been losses, the Phillies have been held to three hits four times. Continue to Article

Philadelphia Phillies
Tommy Joseph is making the Phillies' situation at first base quite tricky. Joseph on Thursday continued building on his red-hot month of May by going 2 for 5 with a game-tying homer in the seventh and a walk-off RBI single in the 11th inning of the Phillies' 2-1 win over the Rockies (see Instant Replay). He's hit .329 in May with six doubles, six homers, 15 RBIs and a .657 slugging percentage. The only first basemen in the majors with a higher slugging percentage this month are Yonder Alonso, Justin Bour and Paul Goldschmidt. That'll hold off the eye-popping production of Rhys Hoskins for now (see Future Phillies Report). Extending it further, Joseph has played 148 career games with 499 plate Continue to Article
