Boston Red Sox
OAKLAND — For a guy with such a funky delivery, Chris Sale brings his words directly and calmly. He showed an attitude Friday night publicly, a spokesman for a Red Sox team that doesn’t always seem to have an identifiable one. The idea that a 21-20 Red Sox team should be in a panic is a stretch after a 3-2 loss to the A's in 10 innings. But playing .500 baseball more than 40 games into the year is, at the least, a seesaw — and therefore a drag.  Few games come easy, even the ones when a possible Cy Young winner are pitching. Sale went eight innings and struck out at least 10 hitters for an eighth consecutive start, tying his own record from 2015. Pedro Martinez had eight inside one season as Continue to Article

Boston Red Sox
OAKLAND -- Mark Canha was sure Ryon Healy had ended the game in the ninth only to be robbed by Jackie Bradley Jr. Canha left no doubt about it one inning later. Canha hit a leadoff homer in the 10th, one inning after Bradley's spectacular catch, and the Oakland Athletics beat the Boston Red Sox 3-2 on Friday night. "You never expect a guy to jump up and make an amazing play like that," Canha said. "But then when it happened I was like, `Oh yeah, that's Jackie Bradley out there.'" Then after Ryan Dull (2-2) pitched a scoreless top of the 10th, Canha capped a three-hit night with the drive to left field off Heath Hembree (0-2) that set off a raucous celebration for the A's. "It's crazy," he said. Continue to Article

Boston Red Sox
OAKLAND — The calamities of Hector Velazquez and Kyle Kendrick return us to the big picture, which has been unchanged since spring training. The 2017 Red Sox season hinges on David Price. Depth and roster building are all concerns for the Red Sox. They need better back-end starters, which is the responsibility of the front office. But if you start ignoring the margins and the smaller-value choices, the concept is simple. It always has been.  The Sox lost David Ortiz, they added Chris Sale, and then they lost Price. Those are huge pieces, players worth four or five wins above replacement in a full season. Forget the Velazquezs of the world. Forget the trade market, where the Sox will have to be Continue to Article

Boston Red Sox ace David Price allowed three runs on five hits and lasted only two innings in making his first minor league rehab start since straining his left elbow in late February. Price was pulled after making just 65 pitches, which was 25 short of what he was projected to throw for Triple-A Pawtucket on Friday at Buffalo. He struck out four and walked one. The 2012 American League Cy Young winner opened the second inning by giving up a leadoff homer to Raffy Lopez, who hit a 2-0 pitch over the 371-foot mark in left-center field. With the bases loaded and one out, Price gave up two runs on Jake Elmore's bloop single into right field. The rough outing puts in question the hopes Red Sox manager Continue to Article

Boston Red Sox
David Ortiz seems to think someone was out to get him back in 2009. Former Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz thinks he knows why someone leaked the results of his failed PED test to the New York Times in 2009, and it has to do with the New York Yankees. Ortiz appeared on WEEI on Friday to promote his new book, “Papi: My Story.” During the interview, Ortiz said he believes his test results were leaked as a response to too many Yankees testing positive at the time.
