New York Mets and Washington Nationals Thread

New York Mets
On more occasions than I’d like to mention, I have offered up a hundred dollars (or more) and four hours (or more) to watch my New York Mets lose. My spreadsheet tells me they’ve lost the last 10 I’ve attended as a civilian, which is an especially unlucky run, yes, but also basically emblematic of the experience of being a Mets fan. What little solace one can find on those gloomy evenings comes from looking across the train car, at the fan wearing not only a Mets cap but a Mets jersey and a Mets jacket and several Mets tattoos, and thinking, well, at least I’m not crazy like him. Nationals introduce K Street section, K-Cards, T-Shirts, and superfans. The Washington Nationals announced via Twitter that they are introducing a new special ticket package for the final Friday home game of each month entitled K Street, named both for the D.C. street and the absurd amount of strikeouts the Nats pitching staff puts up on a daily basis. New York Mets
It took all of 21 games for the Mets to go back to being ... well, the Mets. Already shorthanded to start the year-the team is down starters Steven Matz and Seth Lugo as well as third baseman David Wright-New York was hit with a wave of ailments ahead of its first series against NL East rivals Washington last Friday. Lucas Duda, Wilmer Flores, Travis d’Arnaud, Asdrubal Cabrera and Yoenis Cespedes were all laid up with one problem or another, but despite knowing they would be without all five for at least the series opener and likely all weekend, the Mets opted to put only Duda (hyperextended left elbow) and Flores (infection) on the disabled list. New York Mets
Terry Collins has been around long enough to know when his team is nearing a crossroads. With Thursday’s loss, the Mets have dropped six straight games and 10 out of their last 11 overall. When you combine them with the team’s previous injuries and new injury concerns for Noah Synergaard and Yoenis Cespedes, that’s when resignation, panic and even a reliance on excuses might begin. New York Mets
In their 10 games since April 14, the Mets are 1-9, they've made 13 errors, they're batting just .178, and averaging less than three runs a game. Also, they've played 93 innings, during 40 percent of which they sent just three batters to the plate. This is a classic Sandy Alderson team, though. It's built on power hitting and power pitching. Its goal is to win by hitting home runs and striking guys out. That's it. It's not very nuanced or creative or strategic. It's not about stealing bases, manufacturing runs, pitching to contact or having a top-rated defense. He may be smart, and he might make decisions using statistical evidence, but to Alderson baseball is simple. In 2013, I asked Alderson Continue to Article
