On Wednesday night in Milwaukee, Marquette student Jamey Schilling was just an obnoxious voice in a crowd near the end of hard-fought college basketball game. As Providence star Kris Dunn approached the free throw line in the final minute of a close game, Schilling screamed, "I will literally give you $10 if you miss this shot." Dunn missed one of two free throws keeping Marquette in the game and the Golden Eagles eventually won in double overtime. On Thursday, Schilling proved he wasn't just shouting random nonsense trying to get a laugh out of his friends. He sat down and wrote a check, to Providence athletics not Dunn, along with an explanation for his donation. Dear @PCAthletics , The check is in the mail. #providenceCollegeAthletics pic.twitter.com/JlXgZfukam — Jamey Schilling (@captainJAMErYca) February 11, 2016 [ Anthony Collins can't save Texas A&M from fourth straight SEC loss ] The victory was an important one for Marquette because it kept the Golden Eagles in the hunt for a possible at-large berth in the NCAA Tournament next month, assuming they add to it in a big way in the final month of the season. Marquette is 16-9 overall but just 5-7 in the Big East. Yet, beating the 20th-ranked Friars gives Marquette students like Schilling a reason to keep cheering for their team. So with that in mind, it seems like money well spent. And we give him credit for handling it in a classy way, even wishing the Friars luck with the rest of their season. [ College basketball's All-time Starting Five: Arizona Wildcats ] Schilling also shared his note to Providence on Twitter and by Thursday evening it had been retweeted nearly 700 times and favorited almost 1,000 times. So Schilling managed to raise his profile on campus in the process. Who knows how Providence will receive the note and whether it will actually cash the check. We'll have to do a little follow up once we give the check time to work its way through the snail mail. - - - - - - - [ Kyle Ringo is the assistant editor of The Dagger on Yahoo Sports. Have a tip? Three losses in four games have UCLA back on the NCAA Tournament bubble, though still with a chance to come off if some key wins happen. An opportunity for one comes in Friday night's visit to Arizona, where the Bruins can greatly enhance their shaky profile with a season sweep of the 17th-ranked Wildcats. Just as it did a year ago, UCLA (13-10, 4-6 Pac-12) would stir considerable debate among the selection committee with a solid finish to an overall inconsistent body of work. Continue to Article
